Noldus Information Technology is funding PhD research positions in computer vision and pattern recognition. The duration of PhD is three years which covers salary, and many additional benefits such as allowances for travel, mobility and education. Noldus Information Technology collaborates with the University of Tübingen (Germany) for this Marie Curie European Industrial Doctorate research and training program. Fellows must have master’s degree in the field of computer science, biomedical engineering or electronic engineering.

About Scholarship: Our company Noldus Information Technology is a leading developer of software and instrumentation for the study of human and animal behavior. We are specialists in behavioral observation, video analysis, computer vision, signal analysis, sensor fusion and pattern recognition. Our tools are used in psychology, neuroscience, human factors, consumer science and many other fields. Our clients include more than 6.500 universities, research institutes and companies in over 85 countries. We currently employ 130 people, spread over our headquarters in Wageningen, The Netherlands and branch offices across Europe, North America and China. Our company culture is based on passion for excellence and customer satisfaction, and we strongly believe that the success of our business is related to the dedication of our employees.

The project: Noldus Information Technology collaborates with the University of Tübingen (Germany) in a Marie Curie European Noldus Information Technology Industrial Doctorate research and training program. The project aims at the generation, characterization and validation of transgenic animal models of neurodegenerative diseases (Huntington disease and Spinocerebellar Ataxia type 17). This requires the development of novel methods and techniques for the tracking and analysis of animal behavior. More specifically, it concerns the automated identification and tracking of animals in a social context and recognition of individual and social behavior. Animals will be continuously monitored by a video tracking system that extracts large numbers of features from video images in real-time. Current systems can perform automated behavior recognition on a single animal but not on socially housed animals. The challenge is to develop algorithms and software for error-free identification and tracking of animals in a social context and analysis and recognition of specific body postures, individual behaviors and social interactions. A variety of machine learning techniques will be utilized to solve these technical challenges. Within the project there will be intensive collaboration between computer scientists, behavioral biologists and neuroscientists from industry and academia, resulting in an intensive training and research program with doctoral education and stimulation of entrepreneurship. The positions: Within the project, we have two Ph.D. positions available for research fellows in the field of computer vision and pattern recognition, to be employed by Noldus Information Technology in Wageningen, The Netherlands. One research fellow (vacancy code 2013-P3) will work on algorithms and software for identification and tracking animals in a social context. The second research fellow (vacancy code 2013-P4) will work on algorithms and software for automatic recognition of specific individual and social behaviors. You will be employed for 3 years. During the first 1.5-2 years, you will work within the Research & Development department of Noldus Information Technology in Wageningen. During the remaining time you will work at the University of Tübingen in Germany. Scientific supervision for the total length of the project will be provided by Prof. dr. Remco Veltkamp (Department of Computer Science) and Prof. dr. Berry Spruijt (Department of Biology) of Utrecht University, where the research fellow will be enrolled as a Ph.D. student.

About Scholarship: The PhD school intends to generate scientists who have broad knowledge and expertise in the domain (breadth) as well as contribute to the development of the sciences (depth) through autonomous research, gain new scientific insight and present this comprehensively, gain the ability to solve complex scientific problems in both fundamental and applied research at a high international level according to accepted scientific standards.

A curriculum for doctoral studies of this kind is atypical for Austrian Universities. In Austria, doctoral students traditionally have fewer courses (with less curriculum structure). This PhD curriculum contains more courses, which are structured around the faculty’s research areas. The student’s personal responsibility and commitment to pursuing research is an important prerequisite for a successful PhD thesis.

The objective of this PhD curriculum is to provide an environment that encourages students to contribute to the advancement of technology through independent creative research. One objective of doing a doctoral degree is to become an independent researcher, capable of generating, pursuing and communicating novel research ideas. Therefore, students will become involved in research activities as soon as possible.

Study: The PhD School’s curriculum covers the five main research areas of the Faculty of Informatics:

* Business Informatics;

* Computational Intelligence;

* Computer Engineering;

* Distributed and Parallel Systems; and

* Media Informatics and Visual Computing

It is obvious that the valedictorian, salutatorian, class president and ACT/SAT scholar is going to be awarded several scholarships. Tuition for these individuals is often not even part of the thought process. I commend those who have achieved such excellence, but they are an extreme minority. Chances are you or your children don’t fall into those categories and you are making some big decisions with a lot of questions unanswered.

Take a step back, breathe and realize that you have many options at your fingertips. Finding money to fund an education is not easy, but with diligence and persistent research, it is more than possible. Hopefully by this point in your planning, you have figured out what type of degree you want to be obtaining. Or maybe, you are just interested in general studies while you figure out your path. Either way, you have found yourself in good hands.

If you know what you are planning on studying you may want to look into those scholarship options first. Individual degree programs will offer funds to help fulfill your dreams. For example, if you are looking to go into medicine but don’t really want to be a nurse or a doctor, you can look into medical billing and coding and diagnostic medical sonography at Sanford Brown.

Scholarships are not limited to those entering higher learning for the first time. Are you looking to continue your education and attain your master’s or even doctorate? There are often scholarships funded by individual corporations. Check with your employer, or you could even approach similar corporations to see what they offer.

Furthermore, studying abroad can be extremely easy if you opt to utilize fellowship scholarships offered to those interested in learning about different cultures. This of course is not an option for most that are just now entering the world of higher education. However, for those who have completed your first couple of years, you can take advantage of this before even finishing your undergraduate program.

The truth is that every little bit helps. There are scholarships available for those of certain nationalities, left-handed individuals, blonde hair and all kinds of silly things that no one can change about themselves. There are also funds available for essays that you write as well as bigger scholarships funded by companies trying to grow through the younger generations.

Finding one scholarship to foot the bill may not be possible, but taking advantage of multiple scholarships can keep you moving forward with your goals while ridding yourself of the financial burden that comes with higher education. A sound piece of advice is to apply for all of them that you can. There are only so many scholarships awarded and thousands of people who apply for them. Luckily, the amount of scholarships available makes it easier to obtain at least a couple of them.

The more you know about the path you aim to take, the better prepared you will be in your hunt for the funds required to strive for excellence through education. Anything is possible and the fact that you have found yourself here tells me you are on the right path. Look at the resources available and start filling out the forms, writing the essays, and meeting requirements for each opportunity.
