Applications are invited for Open Society Fellowship. International students are eligible for this fellowship. This is a fellowship for individuals only and does not fund enrollment for degree or non-degree study at academic institutions, including dissertation research. International Fellowship terms are for one year which covers stipend, accommodation, airfare, visa costs, research assistance, conference fees and health insurance. Most fellows spend a portion of their term in one or more Open Society Foundation offices.

About Scholarship: The Open Society Fellowship supports individuals seeking innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges. The fellowship funds work that will enrich public understanding of those challenges and stimulate far-reaching and probing conversations within the Open Society Foundations and in the world. A fellowship project might identify a problem that has not previously been recognized, develop new policy ideas to address familiar problems, or offer a new advocacy strategy. Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Foundations and expect to contribute meaningfully to the Foundations’ thinking in return.

Study: Among the Foundations’ core areas of concern are human rights, government transparency, access to information, access to justice , the promotion of civil society and social inclusion. Project themes should cut across these areas of interest.

Applicants who are uncertain whether their topic fits within the Foundations’ focus areas are invited to submit a brief letter of inquiry, accompanied by a CV, before proceeding with the online application process. That letter of inquiry should be addressed to: OSFellows@opensocietyfoundations.org. Letters of inquiry must be submitted at least one month before the next application deadline.

Course Level: This is a fellowship for individual’s only and does not fund enrollment for degree or non-degree study at academic institutions, including dissertation research

Scholarship By: Open Society Foundation

Location: Most fellows spend a portion of their term in one or more Open Society Foundation offices in New York, Washington, London, Brussels, or Budapest, or at a regional foundation. Fellows who wish to work on their project in a country in which they do not have citizenship must satisfy and comply with applicable visa requirements.

Number of awards: A small number of applicants are selected as finalists. The fellowship program considers applications subject to funding availability.

Duration: International Fellowship terms are for one year, the program will consider requests for shorter or longer durations. Slight preference is given to applications for full-time fellowships, but the program will consider applicants who can only work part-time on their projects.

Value: Full-time fellows will receive a stipend of $80,000 or $100,000, depending on work experience, seniority, and current income.

-Stipends will be prorated for part-time fellows. The stipend does not necessarily equal the applicant’s current salary.

-In certain cases, fellows will receive additional financial support to enable them to meet the residency expectation. In addition to the stipend, fellows will receive a project budget. That budget may include expenses such as travel (including airfare and hotel), visa costs, part-time research assistance, conference fees and health insurance. Fellowship expenses should not include operational or programmatic costs, such as employees and physical infrastructure.

-The purpose of the fellowship is to support individual fellows; therefore the program will only cover individual expenses.

Eligibility: The Open Society Fellowship chooses its fellows from a diverse pool of applicants that includes journalists, activists, academics, and practitioners in a variety of fields.

-Applicants should possess a deep understanding of their chosen subject area and a track record of professional accomplishment.

-The fellowship seeks “idea entrepreneurs” from across the world who are ready to challenge conventional wisdom.

-Successful applicants will be eager to exploit the many resources offered by the Open Society Foundations and be prepared to engage constructively with our global network.

-Ideal fellows are specialists who can see beyond the parochialisms of their field and possess the tenacity to complete a project of exceptional merit.

Scholarship Open for: International students can apply

Selection Criteria: Reviewers consider whether the applicant’s background, track record, and depth of expertise give reason to believe that the project will be successfully completed and whether the applicant offers persuasive evidence that the fellowship project will significantly inform and challenge the Open Society community.

Notification: Applicants are generally notified within four months of the application deadline. Proposals received by August 1, 2013, will be evaluated by December 1, 2013. The following deadline will be February 1, 2014, for evaluation later that year.

Apply: All interested applicants should complete the online application form and submit supporting materials for consideration. Please read the Tips for a Robust Proposal before applying. Applicants may submit a project proposal or other materials in a language other than English, as long as they also submit an English translation. Certified translations are strongly recommended. Once the initial information has been entered, applicants receive login details and an ID number that allows them to make additions and revisions to the form until materials are submitted. The ID number should be quoted in any correspondence.

The program strongly encourages applicants to submit only electronic supporting materials. However, if applicants have hard copy materials that they feel are essential to the evaluation of their project; they can list these at the end of the project proposal. Fellowship staff will reach out to applicants should it be necessary to review these materials.

Note: Only applicants without Internet access may send an application by post. A PDF application form can be downloaded below. All others must apply online.

Deadline: August 1, 2013 and February 1, 2014

PhD project summary: Optimal nutrition of the ewe in pregnancy – a meta-analysis approach

The International Sheep Research Group based at Massey University has a well-established history of undertaking world-class pastoral-based, maternal nutrition studies. Recently this group in collaboration with Otago University has combined this research approach with the meta-analysis of existing data.

A window of opportunity currently exists to

i) publish high impact papers,

ii) develop new management guidelines for farmers and

iii) provide information applicable to other species, such as humans, through the use of meta-analysis.

In many production systems a conflict exists between offering theoretical requirements and herbage availability. Both lamb survival to weaning and its live weight at weaning have significant impacts on farmer profitability. These parameters are greatly influenced by ewe nutrition in pregnancy and lamb birth weight, which in itself is influenced by ewe nutrition in pregnancy.

While there is vast literature examining the impacts of pastoral-based nutrition of the ewe in pregnancy it is somewhat confused/conflicting and clear guidelines for farmers are not readily available. This confusion is driven by differences between studies in variables such as: dam age, dam live weight and condition, breed, number of fetuses carried, timing and level of nutrition intervention in pregnancy and nutritional levels post the intervention period.

Meta-analysis will allow for quantification of the effects of maternal nutrition on lamb live weight, growth and carcass composition. This will then be supported by at least one field study to confirm the results of the meta-analysis.

The proposed PhD programme will deliver high quality science and involves across-site and across-discipline interaction. It will provide further evidence of the effects of early life experiences in utero-on growth and development to weaning. Although the sheep is the animal of interest, and the programme aims to unlock an important agricultural issue, the results will be applicable to other species including humans.

The proposed PhD programme will be an across site and interdisciplinary study with involvement from both Massey and Otago Universities.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the scholarship, students must:

* Be eligible to enrol in a recognised doctoral programme of study and research at Massey University;

* Not work more than 10 hours per week in paid employment while in receipt of this scholarship;

* Have supervisors/co-supervisors associated with both Gravida and Massey University

The ideal candidate will be able to show knowledge of nutrition and mathematical and statistical skills. The successful applicant will be based at the Massey University campus at Palmerston North.

Funding:

Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis. Total funding of $NZ 110,000 for a full 3-year full-time PhD scholarship will be provided by Gravida to suitable students researching an approved topic. The scholarship covers a stipend ($NZ 25,000 per year), fees and limited consumables/working expenses.

Closing date: 19th April 2013

PhD project summary: Is altered mammary function driven by altered metabolism programmed in fetal life?

The International Sheep Research Group has a well-established sheep gestational nutrition model that clearly demonstrates the level of maternal nutrition during pregnancy affects fetal mammary gland development and first lactational performance of ewe offspring.

The liver and the mammary gland have complementary metabolic roles during lactation and demonstrate remarkable metabolic plasticity as they adapt to the changing demands required by lactation. Little is known about the metabolic adaptations that occur in the liver and the mammary gland during lactation in sheep.

The purpose of the proposed PhD programme study is to gain a better understanding of the factors that regulate mammary development and lactation performance and how that may be related to metabolic control in the liver.

The proposed PhD programme is intended to utilise our existing sheep gestational nutrition model and archived tissue samples. The initial aims of the proposed PhD programme would be to examine the existing RNA-Seq transcriptomic data derived from adult mammary gland tissue in late pregnancy and early lactation to identify gene pathways of interest, and if necessary validate these findings with qPCR. These findings would then be related to the lactation performance of the ewes. Additionally, this information would be used to design analyses to examine archived fetal mammary gland and liver tissue to determine how the differing levels of maternal nutrition during pregnancy affected their in utero development, and to determine if these changes may be responsible for the altered lactation observed later in life. In later experiments we aim to investigate the consequences of a nutritional insult on the third lactation performance of these ewes and to collect mammary and liver tissue biopsies. This tissue would be used to determine if relationships exist between gene pathways involved in nutrient metabolism and nutrient transport systems in the liver and mammary gland of lactating sheep.

The student will be based in Palmerston North at Massey University. The proposed PhD programme will be an across site and interdisciplinary study with involvement from Massey and Otago Universities.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the scholarship, students must:

* have knowledge and skills in molecular biology techniques;

* must be eligible to enrol in a recognised doctoral programme of study and research at Massey University;

* not work more than 10 hours per week in paid employment while in receipt of this scholarship;

* have supervisors/co-supervisors associated with both Gravida and Massey University

Funding:

Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis. Total funding of $NZ 110,000 for a full 3-year full-time PhD scholarship will be provided by Gravida to suitable students researching an approved topic. The scholarship covers a stipend (recommended to be $NZ 25,000 per year), fees and limited consumables/working expenses.
