About Scholarship: The main research question will be to integrate knowledge of hydraulic flow patterns and chlorine reaction kinetics to actual disinfection levels. A pilot plant will be constructed with sufficient flexibility so that it can mimic the range of differences observed between contact tank designs identified during an initial survey. The plant will then be operated across a range of flow rates and chlorine doses to develop a disinfection model. The project is embedded in the STREAM programme.

STREAM is an Industrial Doctoral Centre (IDC) for the Water Sector funded through industry sponsors and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and aims to deliver the next generation of research leaders for the water sector. This specific work will be performed with our partner Scottish Water. The four year postgraduate programme leads to the award of an EngD degree including 6 months of taught courses. For the final 12 months of the PhD, the student will return to Swansea University to complete the PhD. The World Health Organisation (WHO) figures from 2008 determined that ischemic heart disease followed by stroke is responsible for 23.6% of all global mortalities. The diagnosis and management of acute ischemic stroke is limited by the lack of rapid diagnostic assays for use in both an emergency and community-based setting. The ability to correlate blood-based protein biomarkers with stroke would aid in the development of such rapid diagnostics. This proposed programme of research would focus on the development of a point of care (POC) diagnostic system based on a silicon nanowire biosensor chip integrated with a micofluidic flow cell.

Uppsala University is offering PhD positions at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences/Geriatrics. The applicant applying for the position should qualify basic trainings and should have MSc in Pharmacy, Engineering with specialization in Drug Development, Biomedicine or Medicine.

About Scholarship: About 100 000 people have Alzheimer’s disease in Sweden today and the number of patients is expected to increase due to an ageing population. It is difficult and hazardous to obtain biological samples from the brain, and thus, most diagnostic methods for Alzheimer’s disease are based on cognitive tests or measurements of different biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid.

Sampling of cerebrospinal fluid is complicated and rather unpleasant for the patient. Hence, there is a need for reliable and non-invasive methods for diagnosis, for studying disease progression and to quantify effects of new treatments in Alzheimer’s disease. The medical imaging method positron emission tomography (PET) is a very attractive diagnosis method as no samples are required. Instead, PET images, based on the spatial distribution of PET-ligands measured with a PET-scanner, visualize targets in brain.

The over-all aim of the project is to develop new PET-ligands for quantification of changes in the brain in Alzheimer’s disease. The project will include both in vitro and in vivo work, as well as statistical and pharmacokinetic analysis of the generated data. The PhD student will mainly focus on his/her research education. However, other responsibilities such as teaching and administrative tasks may also be included (max 20 %).

Study: Position is provided to study medical sciences and its related fields of molecular geriatrics.

Course Level: PhD degree at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences/Geriatrics, Uppsala University

Scholarship By: Uppsala University, Sweden

Location: Sweden

Eligibility: Applicants must be highly motivated and enthusiastic student for a PhD position. Qualifying basic trainings are M Sc in Pharmacy, Engineering with specialization in Drug Development, Biomedicine or Medicine. Experience within biochemistry, protein analysis (ELISA, western blot, chromatography), cell cultures, flow cytometry, histology (immunohistochemistry) and in vivo models is meritorious. It is required that you can express yourself well both orally and in writing in English. You preferably also speak and write Swedish.

Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance, and since most employees in this category are women, men are especially encouraged to apply.

Scholarship Open for: The students of Sweden can apply

Value: Local salary rules will apply.

Apply: Applicants can apply for this scholarship via online mode. The application should be written in English and include a personal letter in which you describe yourself and your research interests, CV, a summary of relevant publications (articles, theses or similar), an attested copy of a transcript stating your academic courses and degrees and other relevant documentation that you wish to refer to. You should also include contact information to references and/or letters of recommendation.

Deadline: 10 March, 2013

The KTH School of Information and Communication technology offers Postdoctoral Position. One postdoctoral position is being provided in the research field of biomolecule nano-sensor. The successful applicants should have a doctoral degree in physics, materials science, electrical engineering (towards microelectronics) or in a related subject.

About Scholarship: The aim of the project is to develop new technologies for electrical detection of biomarkers by using functionalized nanostructures in silicon. Biomolecule sensing is performed using nanowires, defined by lithography, on a silicon chip having microfluidic channels for liquid sample introduction.

For functionalization we are closely collaborating with a group at the Biotechnology school. The position involves electrical characterization of the nanowires, atomic force microscopy and fluorescence characterization of the functionalized chip, performing electrical detection experiments as well as optimization of detection schemes including data analysis.

The project involves close collaboration with PhD students and seniors in the group as well as in biotechnology groups and the position may involve supervision of PhD students and Master’s Thesis students.

Study: Materials physics

Course Level: Postdoctoral degree
