This is a Doctoral Program Merit Based scholarship and students are eligible from National & International Students (European Union Country) to apply for the same. Only 50 such awards are being offered and the deadline for application is 11-Jan-17.

This Scholarship will offer you a comprehensive and attractive package of financial support over the duration of study, which incorporates:-

  • Payment of tuition fees;
  • A maintenance award at the UK Research Councils’ national rate (currently £14,296 per annum);
  • A research training support grant (RTSG) to fund the costs of study abroad, conference attendance and fieldwork;
  • Financial support to participate in a Northern Bridge Autumn Conference, an annual Summer School and a Completion and Leadership Workshop, which include specialist training as well as events focusing on career development and enhancing your employability;
  • Financial support for placements and the acquisition of the skills necessary for you to complete your Phd to the highest standards for Complete Course Duration.

Eligibility: Northern Bridge is seeking to recruit postgraduate students with outstanding academic backgrounds and research potential.

  1. Academic Qualifications and Experience: Competition for Northern Bridge studentships is intense, and we require evidence of academic excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as evidence that the student has sufficient research skills to undertake the project. This generally means a first-class or good upper-second undergraduate degree and performance at or around distinction level in a masters degree. In exceptional cases, candidates with lower qualifications may be considered if they can demonstrate that relevant professional practice or work experience has equipped them with equivalent academic and research skills.
  2. Citizenship and Eligibility: Applicants must be United Kingdom citizens or residents of another European Union country. European Union applicants who have not been resident in the UK for the three years prior to the start of their studentship are eligible for a fees-only award from the AHRC. Institutional funds permitting, Northern Bridge may offer maintenance awards to EU applicants selected for studentships.
  3. Commencement of Awards: To be eligible for a studentship in this current recruitment round you must be applying to commence a programme of doctoral study in the 2017/18 academic year, which starts 1 October 2017. Applicants who have already commenced their doctoral studies are eligible to apply providing they will have completed no more than 18 months of full-time or 36 months of part-time study by 1 October 2017. Awards cannot be deferred and selected candidates will be assumed to be starting their studies on 1 October 2017 unless there are exceptional circumstances.

  • Step One: Contact the Subject Area: Before you apply you will need to explore with Subject Area Contacts whether your area of research interest can be supervised and supported, and begin to identify suitable supervisors.
  • Step Two: Complete an Online Application Form: The selection processes require you to apply through the online application form of the University at which you would like to study. You must include the code AH16 on your application form to indicate that you wish to be considered for a Northern Bridge award:
  1. Applicants to Newcastle University should quote AH16 under ‘Studentship/Partnership Reference’ and ‘Who is your sponsor/funding body?’
  2. Applicants to Durham University should insert AH16 where asked on the form ‘How do you intend to finance your tuition fees’ and ‘living expenses?’
  3. Applicants to Queen’s University Belfast should tick ‘I will apply separately to an external body’ then enter AH16 under ‘To which body do you intend to apply?’

Once all the information has been received by the Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership and the assessment of the submitted documents is complete, you will be informed about your selection in the same.
