EU FP7 ITN EXTRABRAIN Research & Training Network is inviting applications for 11 PhD positions. The positions are open for a research project which aims at understanding how the extracellular matrix (ECM) regulates receptor trafficking in basal conditions and during synaptic plasticity. Candidates of any nationality holding a Master’s Degree or equivalent are eligible to this position. At the time of recruitment by the beneficiary, the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc…) in the country of the beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment under the project.
About Scholarship: The extracellular matrix (ECM) has recently emerged as a fourth “synaptic” element, in addition to presynapse, postsynapse, and glia, which rapidly exchanges molecular signals with the other three. The ECM and call adhesion molecules (CAMs) also span the synaptic cleft, providing a transsynaptic adhesive apparatus, and the molecular steric hindrance imposed by the ECM/CAMs appears to regulate the synaptic dynamics. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that proteolytic activity may release from the ECM/CAMs cryptic ligand(s) that activate cell surface receptors and initiate intracellular signalling cascade(s). Thus, ECM and its enzymatic modifications have emerged as a highly topical research area, also because their extracellular localization makes the development of enzymatic inhibitors more feasible, with better access for novel drugs. In brief, it can be expected that a better understanding of the newly emerging field of ECM and its proteolysis in the brain physiology as well as major diseases shall advance our understanding of the brain as well as change the way its disorders are diagnosed and treated.
Study: The project aims at understanding how the extracellular matrix (ECM) regulates receptor trafficking in basal conditions and during synaptic plasticity.
Course Level: Position is open for a PhD research program at the Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS).
Scholarship by: Polish Academy of Sciences
Eligibility: Eligible to enroll in the PhD programme are candidates holding a Master’s Degree or equivalent and fulfilling the following criteria for eligibility of the researcher(s): To be eligible, each researcher must simultaneously fulfill the following criteria at the time of recruitment by the beneficiary concerned in the frame of this project.
(a) Nationality: The researcher may be of any nationality.
(b) Mobility: At the time of recruitment by the beneficiary, the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc…) in the country of the beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment under the project. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
-As far as international European interest organisations or international organisations are concerned, this rule does not apply to the hosting of eligible researchers, however, the appointed researcher must not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment by the beneficiary in the same recruiting organisation.
Scholarship Open for: The researcher may be of any nationality.
Number of awards: EU FP7 ITN EXTRABRAIN Research & Training Network searches for 11 outstanding PhD candidates.
Apply: The mode of applying is online. Candidates submit the required documents on-line, selecting research projects of interest to them. Candidates can apply for one, two or three projects by marking their first, second and third choice. The following documents should be submitted on-line by November 15:
-application (including a motivational letter), download here, should be scanned and submitted on line
-copy of higher education diploma or equivalent or a certificate of graduation. Candidates entering the competition prior to the official date of their graduation if admitted must submit the missing documents before the start of the PhD programme.
-list of completed subjects and grades achieved in the course of the MS programme (a personal mean and the maximally possible score/grade should be indicated),
-curriculum vitae stating education completed to date and a brief description of scientific achievements and a list of publications.
A researcher (with at least PhD/MD degree) familiar with the scientific activities of the candidate (e.g. advisor of MS thesis) is supposed to send an opinion about candidate to the following e-mail address: Ms. Karen Mueller-Zabel, Karen.Mueller-Zabel@dzne.de
Deadline: November 15, 2013.
