Scholarship Description: The School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences is offering the following PhD Anniversary Research Studentship. Performing optimally under pressure is a fundamental aspect of performance excellence. While some athletes seem to thrive under pressure, others choke. The above research team has been working on this line of research via two theoretical perspectives; reinforcement sensitivity theory and narcissism.
While both theoretical standpoints have been associated with good performance under pressure, some of the mechanisms that might underlie why reinforcement sensitivity theory and narcissism predict performance under pressure appear to be rather different, and in some cases, contradictory.
Thus this studentship will examine the role of narcissism and reinforcement sensitivity theory in relation to performance under pressure, and will examine some of the mechanisms that explain why these theoretical perspectives can account for individual differences in performing under pressure. The student will have the opportunity to shape the exact direction of the research programme in collaboration with the supervisory team.
Deadline: 24 May, 2012
